ha! Giclee ... C'est
Ordure
Mange tout, mange tout
Giclee is a rather pretentious word used in the art trade by
people using inkjet printing.
The term itself was coined by the Californian Jack Duganne in
1991 to dress up a standard print process. Unfortunately Mr
Duganne probably just looked through a French dictionary without
asking a French speaker, because the word they settled on to
describe inkjet printing was "giclee", which translates
as "sprinkle", a term with unfortunate connotations
in French. Much to our amusement.
The printer that 'Giclee' people use is a slightly larger version
of the printer sitting on your desk, although it often uses
environmentally unsound inks (by contrast the inks we use here
are totally non-toxic, and safe even to drink ... although we
haven't tried this yet!).
Inkjet printing works by putting a layer of ink over a surface.
Obviously this makes it vulnerable to scratches and superficial
marks. To extend the lifespan of an inkjet print, Giglee people
apply a laquer or varnish over the top. Not exactly satisfactory.
At Canvas Classics we use a process whereby
the ink is actually fused into the canvas itself, giving
exceptional hardiness (you can even wash a printed canvas in
a washing machine!) and also continuous tone!
And because we do not have to mess about with varnishing etc,
we can make it cheaper, faster and better.
As Del boy would say: Giclee, Pot Pourri!
